Lets set up some ground rules for pages and posts.  There will of course be exceptions but, for the most part…

Pages should start with an H2 – the H1 is in the mast.  Logos will often replace the H1 copy.

Current Guidelines as of 2014-09-25

Pages & Categories

  1. Categories are used for categorizing pages, natch.
  2. The categories are set up as sections of the website
  3.  Pages should be in 1 and only 1 category
    1. For the most part, every page should be in a category, there are rare exceptions
  4. This makes the In This Section navigation’s defaults work for most cases
  5. The broader categories, like About, have to have overrides for the sidebar navigation
  6. Minimize the amount of top level pages.  Pages should have parents.
  7. You should not make new categories without discussing with the rest of the team
  8. Categories group related pages into a section and apply that style to the section

Features, CPT:Sidebars & Categories

  1. Unlike pages, Features & CPT:Sidebarscan go into multiple categories
  2. This allows them to show up in multiple sections of the website
  3. There is limited granularity for where they can show up, that is, you cannot assign a feature or CPT:Sidebar to a specific page, only to a category
  4. You should not make new categories without discussing with the rest of the team

Tags

  1. Tags are for relating content across categories
  2. We will be tagging content so that these related content pieces can show up in sidebar related content widgets
  3. This is also how to get posts to show up in Solution areas

*** OLD STUFF ***

Thoughts:
True or False: Every page must be in at least 1 category?
false
a page can be standalone if it doesn't need association with a news/feature/mini-feature loop
But, all product and solutions pages should have categories

On Pages, Categories are used for Styling, Tags are used for relating content
On Posts, Categories are used for Styling and Pulling in Related News at the bottom, Tags are used for related content.
- so this asks the questions, should posts be styled based on the category they are in? What if in multiple categories?
